Water Planet Adventures features a variety of scuba programs and our exclusive mini-curricula programs in coral reef ecology, Mayan anthropology and rainforest ecosystems. But we are also an oceangoing catamaran based program making sailing and seamanship a primary feature of each Voyage. Sailing any vessel over long distances requires both individual and team work skills in order to achieve a safe and quick transit. Students will learn leadership skills and group participation skills as we sail our boat on a daily basis between dive sites and shore destinations. Each student rotates through all sailing jobs and todays skipper will be tomorrows navigator or winch grinder or line handler or any of about a dozen sailing tasks.
Our teen summer camp programs use Robertson and Caine luxury catamarans which are safe, reliable and fast. Each catamaran is maintained by the Moorings charter agency and each vessel is less than 5 years old. The truly great thing about learning to sail our catamarans, is that all sailboats work and sail the same way with the only variation being the rig. Once basic sailing theory is understood and the principals of boat handling understood, it doesn't matter if it is an eight foot sailing dingy or an eighty foot schooner. Students will know how to sail at the end of our Voyages and go home with skills that can be applied on any sailboat.
